Preparing For Your Tour
Homework For All
One of the keys to pulling off a successful college tour is preparation. That is, preparing yourself and your students for the potentially life-changing experience that lies ahead. Doing your research and homework upfront will enable you to get the most out of this enlightening opportunity.

Counselors and Educators
When your students are embarking on a college tour they need to be prepared, and that means you must be prepared as well. Make sure that you thoroughly research the colleges and universities you will be visiting, as well as the area where the school is located. Look up any of your former students who now attend one of the schools that you’ll be visiting and ask if they will be willing to meet with your group while you are on campus. Research any recent news that you and your students should know about. Immerse yourself in knowledge about the school you will be visiting. All of this is the key to a successful college tour experience.

Parents
For many parents, sending their child off on a college tour, or any school trip can be a very unnerving event. To give you peace of mind and to ensure that your child has the best experience possible, be sure to set and discuss your expectations up front. If you want your child to check in with you on a daily basis, let them know this before they leave. When students get wrapped up in the excitement of being on a college tour they often forget to check in with mom and dad.

Also, be sure to go over topics such safety, behavior, and spending. Budget for the trip and make sure your child has enough spending and “emergency” money set aside; a credit, or prepaid debit card for “emergency” use only may be in order.

A college tour can be a eye-opening and life-changing experience. Make sure you get as much as you can out of your trip by preparing properly. Research each school thoroughly. Make a list of the places/people you want to visit on each campus and create an agenda that will help you make the most of your time there. Prepare a list of unique and intelligent questions for the admissions offices; these are the people making a decision on your application, now’s the time to make a great impression. If there are specific clubs, teams or programs that you are interested in, set aside time to attend a meeting or practice. Proper preparation will be the key to making your college tour experience a rewarding one.
